I work as a sign language interpreter in the Deaf Bhutanese community. Most of these individuals use a combination of Nepali sign language, family signs/gestures, and now they are using some Americans Sign Language which they are learning in classes. It has been a long path for me as I have learned Nepali Sign Language, Hindu culture and attitudes towards the Deaf individuals, life in Bhutan, life in the refugee camps, the role of family in their lives, and expectations of life here in the US.

Hello, I'm so excited to come across this blog. I am a new Special Education teacher and I also have my ESL endorsement. I was recently hired at a school in Aurora, Illinois. I was given a caseload of children and it just so happens I have a Newcomer in the class I'm helping. I have been helping him as well since the teacher usually puts him on the computer during class. He is so bright, but his English is very poor. I've been googling for weeks on how to help him and I've found very little.
ReplyDeleteA little about him.. his family is from Bhutan and has lived in Nepal for just about his whole life. He is about 10 years old and came here in October. The school year is almost over and I will not be able to follow him through middle school. I want to help him be ready because he has shown me what he can do. I have a 3rd grader who helps interpret when needed :/... what else can I do? Do you have any suggestions for books that I could give him or thoughts on better communication? Thanks in Advance :)
